Rankings always divide opinion—and that's exactly why they're worth doing.
Before you scroll straight to the list, it's important to understand what this article is, and perhaps more importantly, what it isn't.
This isn't a ranking based solely on Olympia titles. Nor is it simply a list of who has won the most professional shows. If that were the case, the order would be far easier to determine.
Instead, this is my opinion as both a coach and lifelong fan of bodybuilding.
Having coached athletes for over 12 years, including competitors from first-timers through to IFBB professionals, I've learned that greatness isn't measured by trophies alone. Success at the highest level comes from consistently presenting a complete physique while leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
For these rankings, I considered six key areas:
Current form over the last two to three competitive seasons.
Olympia performances, as the Olympia remains bodybuilding's greatest stage.
Professional victories and consistency throughout the season.
The quality of the physique, including muscularity, symmetry, conditioning, balance and presentation.
Longevity competing at the highest level.
Impact on the division and influence on the athletes who follow.
This isn't a list of the greatest female athletes of all time.
It's my opinion on who the best active female muscular athletes in the world are today.
This one is open to debate…
10. Melissa Teich (Women's Physique) *Why she's here *One of the division's most reliable competitors.
Melissa may not always dominate the headlines, but consistency deserves recognition.
She continually presents a balanced, polished physique with very few weaknesses. She combines muscularity with symmetry and rarely misses her peak, making her one of the safest bets to feature in the top placings whenever she competes.
She represents everything good coaching aims to achieve—consistency.
9. Theresa Ivancik (Women's Bodybuilding) Why she's here A masterclass in muscle maturity.
Few women in bodybuilding possess Theresa's level of muscular density and maturity.
Years at the elite level have created one of the most complete physiques in Women's Bodybuilding, and despite a new generation emerging, she continues to command respect every time she steps on stage.
Longevity at this level deserves recognition.
She looks capable of becoming one of them.
8. Angela Yeo (Women's Bodybuilding) Why she's here
Angela Yeo has quietly established herself as one of the most complete athletes in modern Women's Bodybuilding. Bringing exceptional conditioning, refined muscularity and outstanding balance, she consistently delivers when it matters most.
In a division where size alone isn't enough, Angela's combination of shape, muscle maturity and presentation allows her to stand alongside the very best. Her steady rise through the Olympia ranks and ability to peak on bodybuilding's biggest stage earn her a deserved place among the world's elite.
One of my personal favourites, and taking the win against Ms Olympia Andrea Shaw at Rising Phoenix in 2024, her first defeat since 2019.
**7. Zama Benta (Women's Physique) ** *Why she's here *One of the fastest-rising stars in Women's Physique.
Zama Benta has quickly established herself among the division's elite through her exceptional shape, balance and stage presence.
Each season has brought noticeable improvements, with added muscularity complementing the aesthetic lines that make her physique stand out. She continues to climb the ranks and has all the tools to become a genuine Olympia title contender.
Her best years are still ahead of her.
**6. Barbara Menage (Women's Physique) ** *Why she's here *Balance personified.
Barbara has quietly become one of the most complete athletes in Women's Physique.
She consistently brings outstanding conditioning, excellent symmetry and polished presentation.
She may not receive the same level of attention as some of her rivals, but judges continue to reward quality—and Barbara brings that in abundance.
**5. Sheronica Henton (Women's Physique) ** *Why she's here *Consistency at the highest level.
Sheronica has established herself as one of the division's most consistent competitors, combining muscularity, symmetry and polished presentation with every appearance.
In a division where the smallest details separate the best, her ability to repeatedly deliver on bodybuilding's biggest stage is what earns her a place in my top five.
**4. Helle Trevino (Women's Bodybuilding) ** *Why she's here *A modern legend still competing at the highest level.
Longevity in bodybuilding is never guaranteed.
Helle has spent years proving she belongs among the world's very best.
Her combination of muscle density, conditioning and experience continues to make her one of the most respected competitors in Women's Bodybuilding.
Very few athletes remain this relevant for this long.
**3. Sarah Villegas (Women's Physique) ** *Why she's here *The athlete who redefined Women's Physique.
Few competitors have influenced an entire division quite like Sarah.
Her relentless pursuit of conditioning, professionalism and muscular detail helped redefine what judges expected from a championship Women's Physique athlete.
Even as the division evolves, Sarah remains the benchmark against whom many athletes are still measured.
Champions come and go.
Standards remain.
Sarah helped create that standard.
**2. Natalia Abraham Coelho (Women's Physique) ** *Why she's here *The blueprint for the modern Women's Physique athlete.
If you wanted to design the perfect Women's Physique competitor, you'd struggle to improve much upon Natalia.
Muscularity.
Femininity.
Shape.
Balance.
Presentation.
She blends every judging criterion almost flawlessly.
Her rivalry with Sarah Villegas has elevated the entire division and produced some of the finest Women's Physique battles we've ever witnessed.
****1. Andrea Shaw (Women's Bodybuilding) ** **Why she's here *The dominant force in female bodybuilding.
There could only be one athlete at the top of this list.
Andrea Shaw hasn't simply won bodybuilding's biggest titles.
She's dominated an era.
Her ability to combine overwhelming muscularity with symmetry, conditioning and aesthetics separates her from everyone else.
Many athletes can become champions.
Very few become the standard.
Andrea Shaw is the standard.
For me, she is currently the best pound-for-pound female muscular athlete in the world.
**Honourable Mentions **These athletes narrowly missed my top ten but deserve recognition for their achievements and continued contribution to the sport.
Ashley Jones A challenger to Andrea Shaw's reign. Structure, aesthetics and consistency make her one of the best bodybuilders in the world. Paula Ranta A fantastic ambassador for European Women's Physique whose balanced physique and consistency have earned her respect on the professional stage.
Monique Jones A veteran of Women's Bodybuilding whose influence extends far beyond placings. Her longevity and contribution to the division deserve recognition.
Alcione Barreto Has established herself as one of the most consistent competitors in women's bodybuilding. A multiple-time IFBB Pro winner, including victories at the Europa Pro and Mr. Big Evolution Pro, she backed up her success with a top-five Olympia finish. Combining exceptional muscle density with reliable conditioning, Barreto has earned her place among the sport's elite.
Final Thoughts The hardest part of writing this article wasn't deciding who deserved the number one spot.
It was comparing athletes from two completely different divisions.
How do you compare Andrea Shaw's incredible muscularity with Natalia Abraham Coelho's flawless balance?
Should Sarah Villegas' influence on Women's Physique outweigh Helle Trevino's longevity in Women's Bodybuilding?
Does current form matter more than career achievements?
There are no definitive answers, and that's what makes these conversations so enjoyable.
One thing, however, is beyond debate.
Women's Physique and Women's Bodybuilding have never possessed this depth of talent. Across both divisions, athletes continue to raise the standard, forcing judges, coaches and fans alike to rethink what excellence really looks like.
Whether your rankings look completely different or almost identical to mine, that's the beauty of bodybuilding.
It's subjective.
And that's exactly why we'll never stop debating it
